The romance of Blue Box is certainly the central draw of the series, yet it's endearingly intertwined with the experiences of its high school athletes and their journeys of self-improvement. Taiki Inomata has taken major strides toward asserting himself as an up-and-coming badminton player to even be recognized by his seniors, but not without some lighthearted mockery and minor setbacks. But in Blue Box episode #4, as Chinatsu Kano continues to get closer to Taiki, the two figure out their dynamic while each prepare to aspire toward the nationals.

Blue Box balances its sports and human connection with a healthy dose of comedy, often creating relatable yet hilarious scenarios as Taiki continues to overthink his earnest, budding affection for Chinatsu. The pair are more compatible than either perhaps realize, but with a year between them and their connection largely kept a secret from most of the school, Taiki continues to try and figure out if he has a shot. However, in the release of Blue Box episode #4, one additional step will be to see whether the two are too comfortable around each other for their own good.

Taiki continues to juggle his ambitions to join the singles players in Eimei's badminton team at the nationals while remaining attentive to Chinatsu. Meanwhile, Taiki is allowed a match with Haryu-senpai, and he quickly learns how outmatched he is in experience in Blue Box episode #3. Taiki remembers Chinatsu's wish ribbon, empowering him to improve his game vastly near the end. But through Haryu-senpai's incessant drilling, Taiki works on his footwork, smashes, and overall badminton IQ. Haryu pulls Taiki aside after school to talk with his fellow seniors, recognizing the young player's growth. The wholesome surprise awaiting Taiki is that Chinatsu is with the group, quietly giving him words of affirmation to follow Haryu's. Haryu then clarifies that he has a girlfriend who is not Chinatsu.

In Blue Box episode #4, Taiki's romantic developments with Chinatsu encounter a new obstacle: whether Chinatsu views Taiki as a boy and, therefore, a romantic prospect and not merely a housemate. This moment arises from a development adapted from chapters #8 and #9 from the manga, where each encounters a classic roommate mishap involving their uniforms. As the two continue to conceal their living situation from their friends, this results in a hilarious misunderstanding with Hina Chono as Taiki prepares for the regional preliminaries.
But another moment will soon arise as Taiki is reminded that their age difference inevitably means Chinatsu won't be around for as long as he will at Eimei, as she is a year closer to graduation. It creates more pressure for him to join her at the national level with the hopes that she notices him, but Chinatsu does what she does best to help alleviate that; however, her words may fall flat this time. In Blue Box episode #4, Taiki realizes how hard he needs to work to close the gap between him and Chinatsu.
